American Traditional Tattoo Alphabet

Design Brief

This project is inspired by Instagram’s 36 Days of Type, a project that invites artists and designers to interpret the alphabet in a unique way. I chose to focus on American Traditional tattoos for my theme because I am really drawn to the imagery, use of color, and clean line work. All illustrations were created in ProCreate.

Solution

I wanted the illustrations to be the focal point, so I paired them with a clean sans serif font. I also used a bright color palette relating to the traditional style. The illustrations all interact with the shape of the letterform to create a fun grid while the background reflects traditional tattoo flash sheets.

Going Further…

I wanted to create a physical space for these illustrations to live so I designed a collector’s book. The goal of this book is to showcase the detailed images while explaining the traditional iconography in a way that is bold, yet easily digestible for the reader.
